Nestled in the peaceful hills of Nagarkot, where the Kathmandu valley meets the sky, I begin each day with gratitude and purpose. As a yoga teacher from Nepal, teaching yoga has not only been my profession since 2017—it is my life’s calling, my offering to the world. Today’s morning rooftop yoga session with five guests from France reminded me once again why I chose this path.
The Magic of a Nagarkot Morning
The sun had just begun to rise, casting soft golden light over the pine forest surrounding my homestay. Birds chirped gently in the distance, and a cool breeze carried the scent of earth and trees. This is the Nagarkot I love—pure, calm, and alive.
Our rooftop yoga shala sits just beside a serene pine forest. It’s an open space surrounded by green trees and fresh air, where nature becomes our guide, and the environment supports every breath and movement. There’s no better place to practice yoga in Nepal than right here.
Welcoming Guests from France
As the guests gathered on the rooftop this morning, I welcomed each of them with a warm “Namaste.” All five of them had traveled from France, eager to explore Nepal and deepen their yoga journey. Some had practiced yoga before, others were beginners—but all shared the same intention: to connect with their bodies, minds, and nature.
Before we began, I offered a short introduction about our surroundings, the benefits of morning practice, and how the combination of nature and ancient yogic techniques can bring balance and healing.
Rooftop Yoga Flow: Asanas in Harmony with Nature
We started with gentle warm-up movements to awaken the spine and bring awareness to the breath. With the rising sun above us and the forest nearby, the setting created a perfect harmony of energy and peace.
We moved through a dynamic series of asanas, including:
- Tadasana (Mountain Pose) – Feeling the grounding energy of the earth beneath.
- Virabhadrasana (Warrior Series) – Embracing strength and focus.
- Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) – Expanding the breath and body into the morning light.
- Vrikshasana (Tree Pose) – Balancing in stillness while looking at the surrounding trees.
- Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog) – Connecting the entire body with the breath.
Each of my guests flowed gracefully. Even those newer to yoga found their rhythm. I gently corrected their alignment and offered modifications where needed. By the time we reached our final round of poses, their faces were calm, their breath steady.
Savasana and the Healing Sound of the Singing Bowl
We concluded our physical practice with Savasana, the final relaxation pose. As they lay on their mats, eyes closed, I gently played my Tibetan singing bowl. The vibration filled the air, grounding the energy and calming the nervous system. The sound waves melted tension, inviting deep rest and inner stillness.
I believe sound healing is one of the most powerful tools we can use to enhance a yoga practice. It speaks directly to the subconscious, releasing energy blocks and encouraging the body to heal from within.
Breathwork: Bhramari Pranayama
After the body was relaxed, we turned inward for Pranayama—the yogic practice of breath control. I introduced them to Bhramari Pranayama, also known as the humming bee breath. This technique involves producing a gentle humming sound while exhaling, which creates vibrations in the head and throat.
Benefits of Bhramari include:
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Calming the mind
- Improving focus and sleep quality
- Harmonizing the nervous system
My French guests embraced the practice beautifully. The air was filled with the soft, soothing hums of five focused yogis, in sync with the forest around them.
Guided Meditation: The Journey Within
We ended the session with 10 minutes of silent meditation. Sitting comfortably, they followed my voice into a short visualization that guided them through nature—a journey from the mountain peak to the forest floor. With every breath, they went deeper into calmness.
The silence that followed was profound.
When they opened their eyes, a peaceful glow was visible on each of their faces.
A Moment to Remember: Group Photo with Namaste
After the session, we came together for a group photo—hands in Namaskar Mudra, hearts open, and smiles bright. The photo captured more than just the faces of five travelers and a yoga teacher; it captured a shared moment of presence, peace, and connection.
They thanked me with genuine appreciation, saying it was one of the best yoga experiences of their journey. One of them said, “It feels like we practiced not just yoga, but also silence, nature, and the heart.”
Their words touched me deeply.
